Amazing! When a limestone rock is placed in a solution of acetic acid, beautiful popcorn-like crystals actually grow out of the rock. In this activity, students place a limestone rock in a weighing dish with acetic acid and allow the contents to sit undisturbed for a week. The result is a delicate, coral-like covering of white calcium acetate crystals on the exposed rock surface. Use this fun crystal-growing activity to teach students about chemical reactions and the properties of acids and bases. Includes student procedure and Teacher Notes, acetic acid solution, reusable limestone rocks and weighing dishes.
