Pass an electric current through a solution, and collect pure silver metal! Demonstrate the real-world uses of electrochemistry with this innovative lab activity. Students investigate the reactions of copper, zinc and silver salt solutions in a partitioned Petri dish with mini-carbon electrodes. A simple 9-volt battery serves as a power source. The products are a beautiful metal coating at the negative electrode. A great activity for an applications-oriented chemistry class. Includes metal salt solutions, partitioned Petri dishes, battery caps with leads, pencil lead electrodes, reproducible student handouts, detailed background information and Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to all questions.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. 9 V batteries are required and available separately.
