Product Description

A rainbow spectrum of color changes provides visual proof of the effect of a catalyst. Hydrogen peroxide is added to two separate flasks, each containing a basic solution of sodium thiosulfate, along with universal indicator. One flask also contains the catalyst ammonium molybdate. The reaction produces sulfate ions, water, and hydrogen ions. As hydrogen ions are produced and the pH changes, the universal indicator changes color from purple to blue to green to yellow to red-orange. By plotting the times at which the color changes occur versus the pH values of the indicator colors, students can compare the relative speeds of the catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions. Includes comprehensive Teacher Demonstration Notes and reproducible student worksheets. Enough materials are provided to perform the demonstration seven times.

Concepts: Oxidation-reduction, catalysts, acid-base indicators, reaction rate.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Ammonium molybdate, hydrogen peroxide solution, sodium hydroxide solution, sodium acetate, sodium thiosulfate, and universal indicator solution.
