Characteristics of Protists - Student Laboratory Kit
Product Description

By: The Flinn Staff

Explore the diverse microscopic world of protists with this innovative lab activity. The diversity of the Protista kingdom is represented by Euglena, Paramecium, Amoeba, diatoms, and colonial Volvox. Students begin the laboratory with a detailed study of stained, prepared microscope slides. Once students have mastered the morphology and internal features of each type of protist, they capture live specimens from aqueous cultures. The students discover the characteristics of these living specimens as they twirl, ooze, dart or roll through the field of view of a compound microscope! Finally, students stain the living specimens to observe the major external and internal features that are revealed as the biological stain permeates the cell and organelle membranes. Includes one prepared slide each of Euglena, Paramecium, Amoeba, diatoms, and Volvox, plus depression slides, methylene blue stain, and methyl cellulose.

Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Compound microscopes and live cultures are required and available separately.

Amoeba proteus, Culture, Class Size 30
Amoeba proteus. Common in freshwater lakes, ponds and slow-moving streams. Popular for the study of basic animal cell structure, major organelles and the process of phagocytosis. Single nucleus. Protists, Pseudopods Unicellular organisms characterized...
Diatoms, Mixed freshwater species, Culture, Class Size 30
Chrysophyta-Diatoms   Division that includes the Bacillariophyceae-the diatoms. Diatoms possess chlorophylls a and c and accessory carotenoids which are responsible for the characteristic coloration. Food is stored as the polysaccharide...
Euglena, Culture, Class Size 30
Euglena. Extremely active organism moves by means of single flagellum. Popular for behavioral studies involving responses to light, temperature, and pH (taxes). Also used for vitamin B12 assay. Protists, Flagellates Unicellular organisms characterized...
Paramecium caudatum, Culture, Class Size 30
Paramecium caudatum. Possesses one micronucleus and one macronucleus. Osmoregulatory action of contractile vacuole can be observed by exposing organism to hypo- and hypertonic solutions. Protists, Ciliates Unicellular organisms characterized by movement...
Volvox, Culture, Class Size 30
Volvox. Large, photactic colonies of Chlamydomonas-like cells surrounded by a common gelatinous matrix. Reproduces asexually via the development of daughter colonies within the hollow sphere of the parent colony. Protists, Flagellates Unicellular organisms...
