Product Description

By: The Flinn Staff

Shake and light up your classroom! Engage your students by building a flashlight that doesn’t need batteries—it harnesses and stores the power of a handshake. Students see an unforgettable, real-world application of Faraday’s law of magnetic induction. Powerful neodymium magnets are shaken through 600 feet of coiled magnet wire, inducing an alternating current. An arrangement of diodes converts the alternating current to direct current, which is stored in a supercapacitor. Simply flip the switch, and the capacitor releases the stored energy in the form of light through an LED.
Reusable breadboard can be dismantled and reassembled as needed, or left completed to demonstrate year after year. Kit includes all components to create one shake flashlight—pre-coiled 600’ of magnet wire, three neodymium magnets, breadboard and all circuit components needed to convert AC to DC and store it, and two red LEDs. An excellent demonstration to teach students how to build a circuit and the functions of different circuit components.
