Why are fish jumping out of the water in the heat of summer? Without a critical supply of dissolved oxygen, fish and other aquatic organisms would not survive. How do environmental factors such as temperature affect the level of dissolved oxygen?

In this cooperative lab activity, students analyze water samples at various temperatures using the Winkler method, a standard wet-chemical technique for determining the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. After pooling their data and graphing and analyzing the results, students learn about the relationship between dissolved oxygen and water quality. Small-scale titration procedure gives accurate results!
Includes detailed Teacher Notes, extensive background material, reproducible student handouts, and all necessary chemicals and specialized equipment.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
