There is more to spinach than meets the eye! A green leafy vegetable, spinach contains iron, chlorophyll, and several other pigments. Students are guided in the use of basic column chromatography techniques to find and identify these accessory pigments in spinach. Hands-on experiment will show how pigments are extracted at different rates based on the polarity of the eluent used. Once extracted, the pigments are collected and analyzed to determine relative polarity. Includes reusable columns, spinach powder, and all necessary chemicals.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Additional columns are available separately. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
