Glowing gummy worms! In this colorful demonstration “gummy worm” polymers containing three different types of dyes fluoresce when exposed to an ultraviolet (black) light. As the glowing worms emerge from the solutions, students see what happens when long polymer chains are “tied together” by cross-linking. Your students will be captivated while learning more about polymers and fluorescence with this unforgettable demonstration. Includes detailed instructions and enough material to perform the activity as written at least 25 times. Requires a ultraviolet lamp (sold separately).

Materials Provided: Calcium chloride, fluorescein, rhodamine B, sodium alginate, tonic water, forceps, jumbo pipets.
