Product Details

Learn about termites and study animal behavior! Termites are an important part of food chains and soil ecosystems with a complex caste system. Each member of the colony must communicate with other colony members in order for the colony to thrive. Termites use pheromones, vibrations and physical contact to communicate with each other. A chemical in some inks mimics one of the contact pheromones from worker and soldier termites. Students investigate variables, such as color, paper, texture, pattern and ink, to determine what it is that makes termites do what they do!

Super Value Kit is complete for 15 student groups—all materials are reusable! Termites are required and available separately. Termites from Flinn are not able to reproduce or survive if they escape, making them perfect for the classroom!

Performance Expectations

MS-LS2-2: Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple ecosystems.
MS-LS1-4: Use argument based on empirical evidence and scientific reasoning to support an explanation for how characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants respectively
HS-LS2-8: Evaluate evidence for the role of group behavior on individual and species’ chances to survive and reproduce
