AP Biology Acitivity - Enzymes and Cellular Regulation
Digestive enzymes are protein-based biological catalysts that play important roles in our lives. They help remove stains from our shirts, turn milk into cheese, and are responsible for turning our dinner into useable fuel for our bodies. Enzymes however don’t work well universally. Some are meant to work at high temperatures, some at low temperatures. They may work best in acidic conditions or neutral conditions. In this activity we will look at the optimal conditions for two different enzymes. The digestive enzyme, lipase, is made in the pancreas and breaks down lipids in the small intestine, while pepsin, breaks down proteins in the stomach.
Biology Activity - Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells
An efficiency apartment is a one-room apartment. This one room is where you sleep, eat, shower, and entertain your guests. It all happens in one room. It is a simple way of living in a small space. A mansion is a large, complex living space with many separate rooms. There are rooms for cooking, eating, sleeping, bathing, reading, watching TV, entertaining guests, exercising, and storage. The rooms in a mansion are constructed for the specific things you would like to be able to do. You can live in simple efficiency or complexity. In this activity we will be looking at cells that are as simple as a one-room efficiency apartment or as complex as a mansion.
Chemistry Activity - Electron Energy and Light
From fireworks to stars, the color of light is useful in finding out what’s in matter. The emission of light by hydrogen and other atoms has played a key role in understanding the electronic structure of atoms. Trace materials, such as evidence from a crime scene, lead in paint or mercury in drinking water, can be identified by heating or burning the materials and examining the color(s) of light given off in the form of bright-line spectra.
