Product Details

Challenge students to deduce the chemical reaction that leads to dramatic color changes when a sample of copper carbonate is heated. Copper carbonate is added to a flask, and a wine airlock containing bromthymol blue solution is placed on top of the flask. The flask is then heated on a hot plate, decomposing the green copper carbonate to black copper oxide and carbon dioxide gas. The gas bubbles through the bromthymol blue indicator solution, lowering the pH and causing a color change from blue to yellow. Through a series of guided questions, students determine what reaction is occurring and what products form. Teacher Demonstration Notes, reproducible student worksheet and answer sheet are included.
