Acid Rain in a Micro Environment - Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Item #: FB0010
The Acid Rain in a Micro Environment Chemical Demonstration Kit brings the outdoors inside. A micro environment is created in an aquarium following a "rainstorm" simulation. Bring exciting visual imagery to otherwise vague concepts.
This item can only be shipped to schools, museums and science centers
Automobiles and factories belching smoke and fumes into a toxic, unbreathable atmosphere. A pristine pond and a deadly rainstorm. Create this dramatic scenario for your class! A micro environment is created in an aquarium where sulfur and nitrogen oxides are generated. A “rainstorm” is simulated which carries the airborne pollutants to the “pond” and “countryside” below. The effects are immediate, obvious, and unforgettable. Bring exciting visual imagery to otherwise vague, intangible concepts.
Teacher Demonstration Notes included. Enough materials are provided to perform the demonstration seven times.
Concepts: Environmental chemistry, acid–base indicators, pH, gases, neutralization reactions.
Time Required: 30 minutes.
Chemicals Provided: Universal indicator, marble chips, sulfur, nitric acid, sodium hydroxide solution, and hydrochloric acid solution.
Note: A 15- to 20-gallon aquarium, sand or fine gravel, large disposable roasting pan, and aluminum foil are needed but not provided; fume hood is strongly recommended.
