Learn how to isolate DNA from human cells—yours! DNA can be isolated from many types of tissue. In this activity, students extract DNA from their own cheek cells. The procedure for securing student cheek cells is safe and requires only a rinsing of the mouth with water. Isolating “personal” DNA adds
a great deal of student interest to a lab that otherwise might be less than exciting.
Note: The procedures detailed in this kit
can be used to “spool” DNA from many different sources other than cheek cells. Complete for five classes of 30 students working individually.
Exploring Plant & Animal Cells— Super Value Laboratory Kit
This two-part activity has students identify and label animal and plant cell parts to
better understand function and the vari-
ance between the two types. Students then prepare and stain their own plant and animal cell microscope slides and compare their sketches of the prepared slides. Super Value Kit is complete for five classes of 30 students working in pairs.
