FLINN SCIENTIFIC I AP* PHYSICS 2AP* PHYSICS 2 INQUIRY KITSArchimedes’ Principle and BuoyancyAP Physics 2, Big Ideas 1 & 3, Investigation 1 Through care-ful measurements and observations of submerged objects, students discover the law of buoyancy. The lab begins with an introductory activity to determine the buoyant force on a vial in water. Students create and use free-body diagrams to analyze the situation. The procedure provides a model for a guided- inquiry activity, during which students design and carry out experiments to determine the density of an unknown salt solu-tion and the volume and density of a clay piece. As an optional extension, students may be challenged to design a floating clay vessel that can carry additional mass without sinking. Students are encouraged to engage in a class discussion regarding conservation of energy to evaluate the continuity equation. This leads to a guided-inquiry activity in which students design and carry out an investigation to deter-mine the rate of flow of water from a container.AP7996 I $36.35Boyle’s Law AP Physics 2, Big Idea 5, Investigation 3 The purpose of this advanced-inquiry investigation is to derive a mathematical equation describing the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at constant temperature. In the introductory part of the experiment, students learn how to set up a special apparatus and quantify the amount of applied force to compress the gas. In the guid-ed-inquiry portion of the experiment, students are challenged to derive the relationship between pressure and volume by constructing graphs, which they must further interpret to determine the amount of work done on, or by, the gas.
