Roller Coasters—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Roller coasters provide the opportunity to learn about conservation of energy, accelera- tion, friction and engineering design in a fun and exciting way! First, students determine how changing the release height and mass of a ball affect the distance the ball will travel on a straight track with a single rise. Students then apply their findings and knowledge of conservation of energy to design a roller coaster with specific criteria and constraints, using only the materials provided to create a thrilling yet safe ride!
Cooking with Solar Energy— Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Students make a basic box-type solar oven and then investigate how high the internal temperature reaches in a given amount of time. Students then apply their knowledge of science concepts, such as heat transfer, reflection, absorption and the greenhouse effect, to design and implement improve- ments for a more efficient oven. Complete for eight student groups.

Solar-Powered Cars—
Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Students build their very own model cars that run on energy from the sun! In the first part of this activity, students learn how a solar car works and build a model prototype. Next, they investigate different variables to deter- mine their effects on the car’s performance. Based on the data collected and their obser- vations, students create an optimal design solution for a faster moving car. Complete
for eight student groups.

Marble Down—
Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Set minds in motion with the Marble Down Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM! Engage students in engineering design as they ask questions, define problems, plan, create, test, evaluate and more! First students investigate the effects of variables on the marble’s speed along a rubber band track, then they apply the introductory activity concepts in building a marble maze with the longest run time. Complete for 10 groups of students.
