Force and Motion—
Build a Model Catapult—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Inspire creative
engineering in your
classroom with this
high-flying design challenge!
In the introductory activity, students
build a basic catapult using simple materials. Then they test their machines to determine how variables, such as the length of the lever arm and mass of the projectile, affect launch distance. Using their data and observations, students brainstorm how to make improve- ments to the design in order to accurately launch a projectile at a target.

Build a Mini Hovercraft— Guided-Inquiry Kit
As students build their own working models of a hovercraft, they learn the basic concepts of how a vessel is able to “ride on air.” Once construction is complete, students test their models, make observations and propose testable questions. As students plan and carry out investigations, redesigning their models if they choose, they gain valuable experience in scientific and engineering practices. A great STEM activity to include when covering the concepts of force, motion, energy or air pressure. Complete for eight student groups.

Tandem-X Rocket Launch Set
Blast off with this exciting pair of rockets. Almost three feet high, the tiger-striped AmazonTM rocket reaches over 650 feet while the streamlined 15" CrossfireTM can reach 1,200 feet! Durable with straightforward building directions. Rockets safely return to Earth using colorful parachutes. Set includes Amazon rocket, Crossfire rocket, Porta-Pad II® launch pad and Astron IITM Launch Controller. Requires 9-V battery and rocket engines.
AP7390 I $36.50
Super Value Laboratory Kit
With this all-in-one kit, students can study the fundamentals of force and motion! Students study Hooke’s law by performing an egg bungee-jump, explore gravity and rotational motion by racing a ring and a disc down an inclined plane and more. These five experi- ments cover essential topics, such as balanced and unbalanced forces on an inclined plane, frictional forces, Hooke’s law, rotational motion and collisions in one dimension. Easy-to-set-up lab stations allow each student group to exper- iment with one force and motion activity. Once one activity is completed, students move on to the next station.
AP6929 I $161.40
IMSA Fusion—Take Flight: Investigating the Aviation Industry
In the IMSA Fusion—Take Flight: Investigating the Aviation Industry STEM Curriculum Classic Module Kit, students are immersed in the various facets of the aviation industry, ranging from aircraft design and assembly, airport structure and runway design, navigation, air traffic control and airline efficiencies to the environmental impact and economic impact aviation has on their lives. Grades 6–8.
