Enzymes—The Catalysts of Life— Student Laboratory Kit
Hands-on activities in this kit include the examination of a digestive enzyme reaction, the measurement of the effect of enzyme concentration on reaction rate, the effect of temperature on reaction rate and the effect of pH on reaction rate. After initial data are collected, students are encouraged to design their own experiments to explore other vari- ables. Complete for 30 students working in pairs. A Super Value Kit is also available for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.

Catalase Investigation with Purified Enzyme— Super Value Guided-Inquiry Kit
First, students precisely control the concentration of catalase while varying the concentration of the substrate. After refining the floating disk assay protocol, students design experiments to test other variables. Connect this investigation to the importance of maintaining homeostasis for proper enzyme function and the role of enzymes in evolution. Aligned to NGSS. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.

Digestive Enzymes at Work—Student Laboratory Kit
Explore the roles of enzymes in the human digestive system. The lab starts with amylase and then students observe the reaction of pepsin with protein molecules in an acidic environment like the stomach. Finally, students analyze the “digestion” of milk by lipase. Iodine, Benedict’s reagent, biuret test solution and litmus are included in the kit, along with the enzymes to test for the end products of digestion. Complete for 30 students. A Super Value Kit is also available for 5 classes of 30 students. Boiling water baths are required.

Juicing Enzymes: Enzymes Used in the Food Industry—Student Laboratory Kit
In this controlled experiment, students investigate the effects of pectinase and cellulase on the amount of juice obtained from an apple. This “natural” experiment helps students build connections between the basic principles of enzyme action, including optimum pH and temperature, and real-life applications in food science and food production. A 0.1-g precision balance and apples are required. Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
