  How Can It Hurt You?
This is a key question you must routinely ask about all chemical substances. Lead is an example of a substance we routinely encoun- ter in our daily lives outside the laboratory. If you or your students will be exposed to lead as a dust or a fume, then you need to seek a means of avoiding that contact. Make sure there is good ventilation in the room, and use a fume hood if possible. Certainly lead and its compounds should be of concern to you—but be realistic about the answer to the question concerning how it can hurt you.
