Ammonium Dichromate
reagent, crystal (NH4)2Cr2O7 F.W. 252.06
(Packaged in PVC-coated bottle)
HAZARD ALERT: Both liquid and vapor are extremely irritating— especially to eyes. Dispense in a hood and be sure an eyewash is accessible. Moderately toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Serious respiratory hazard. LD50 350 mg/kg.
Storage: Inorganic #4 in a dedicated base cabinet. If one is not available store in a Flinn Saf-CubeTM.
Disposal: #10
Shelf Life: Indefinite if stored safely.
Color and Odor: Colorless liquid with strong ammonia odor.
CAS No. 1336-21-6
Cap Color Code: Green
Safety Purchase Consideration: Buy and store only small package sizes and small quantities. For safety reasons, Flinn offers larger sizes of ammonium hydroxide and other hazardous substances in PVC-coated bottles. We have attempted to price the products in these safer containers as low as possible.
*Ammonium hydroxide is exactly as described under catalog number A0052 but in a PVC-coated bottle. In the event of breakage, base and glass shards are safely retained in a PVC outer envelope. The PVC-coated bottle is a safer package choice.
HAZARD ALERT: Known carcinogen. Very strong oxidizing agent; dangerous fire risk; dusts and solutions are toxic; irritant to eyes and skin. Possible reproductive/fertility hazard.
Storage: Inorganic #8
Disposal: #12a
Shelf Life: Fair; decomposes with slight heating; keep away from all organic materials.
Soluble: Water and alcohol.
Color and Odor: Orange, odorless solid.
CAS No. 7789-09-5
Incompatibility: Reducing agents, such as powdered metals, form an explosive mixture with magnesium metal powder. Avoid contact with oxidizable (flammable) organic compounds.
SPECIAL HAZARD ALERT: The “volcano” experiment or demon- stration is a popular use of ammonium dichromate. When heated to decomposition, ammonium dichromate produces nitrogen, water, and chromium(III) oxide. Chromium compounds are known carcinogens. Because of this risk, the “volcano” demon- stration should be conducted under a well-ventilated hood or outdoors. This demonstration should never be done in a closed, poorly ventilated room. Strict hygiene should be observed before and after the combustion.

Prevent Chemical Contamination
Stop one student’s carelessness from ruining an experiment for the rest of your class. Prevent contamination of chemical stock bottles by:
1. Never allowing student access to stock bottles.
2. Never returning unused chemicals to stock bottles. Pure chemicals help yield accurate results.
HAZARD ALERT: Skin and eye irritant; moderately toxic by inges- tion. LD50 333 mg/kg.
Storage: Inorganic #8
Disposal: #6
Shelf Life: Indefinite
Soluble: Water; not alcohol.
Color and Odor: White, odorless solid. CAS No. 12054-85-2
