Storage: Inorganic #9 in a dedicated acid cabinet. If one is not available, store in a Flinn Saf-CubeTM. See our special storage tip for additional information.
Cap Safety Color Code: Blue
Disposal: #24b
Shelf Life: Good if stored safely.
Soluble: Water
Color and Odor: Colorless liquid with very strong chlorine odor. CAS No. 7647-01-0
Incompatability: Avoid storing hydrochloric acid anywhere in the vicinity of formaldehyde. A potent carcinogen, chlorome- thoxychloromethane, is formed when hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde react in air. This serious potential problem further emphasizes the need to store hydrochloric acid in a dedicated acid cabinet.
Safety Purchase Suggestion: Buy and store only small package sizes and small quantities. For safety reasons, Flinn offers larger sizes of hydrochloric acid and other hazardous substances in PVC-coated bottles. We have attempted to price the products in these safer containers as low as possible.
*Hydrochloric acid is exactly as described under catalog number H0005 but in a PVC-coated bottle. In the event of breakage, acid and glass shards are safely retained in a PVC outer envelope. The PVC-coated bottle is a safer package choice.
SPECIAL STORAGE TIP: Hydrochloric acid fumes a lot—particularly when warm. These fumes are responsible for most of the corro- sion damage in your acid storage area. To solve this problem, store hydrochloric acid bottle(s) in a tightly sealed plastic bag. Be sure to label the outside of the plastic bag since acid fumes will soon destroy the bottle label. Spray the label on the bottle with Krylon® plastic spray (Catalog No. AP1559) if you wish to preserve it.

Use a Bag and a Can
Iodine is a good example of a substance that is determined to leave its bottle and is frequently successful in doing so. Many of you have seen the localized damage caused by iodine to metal shelves, shelf clips and more. Put the bottle in a bag. Use a twist tie to close the bag. Now place the bagged bottle in a clean, fresh paint can. Use cat litter as an absorbent inside the can. The iodine will destroy the can instead of your shelves. You can replace the can easier than your shelving.
HAZARD ALERT: Corrosive to body tissue. Severe respiratory hazard. Toxic by ingestion and inhalation. TLV 9.9 mg/m3 as HBr gas.
Storage: Inorganic #9 in a dedicated acid cabinet. If a dedicated acid cabinet is not available, store in a Flinn Saf-CubeTM.
Shelf Life: Fair, if stored safely. Light sensitive. Darkens on expo- sure to light.
Disposal: #24b
