HAZARD ALERT: Strong oxidizer; slightly toxic; irritant. LD50 1870 mg/kg. Extremely dangerous since the substance, if only slightly contaminated, will explode when exposed to moderate shock or when heated. Because this substance is so frequently a source of accidents we have elected to list some of the incompatible substances that should be avoided:
Ammonium Salts Carbon
Combustible Material Finely Divided Materials Sulfur
Phosphorus Sulfuric Acid Metal Powders Organic Materials Sugar

 SPECIAL HAZARD ALERT: Only pure manganese dioxide (manganese(IV) oxide) should be used with potassium chlorate for oxygen preparation. A safer method is the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. You will find this method recited in detail under the oxygen gas listing in this Catalog/Reference Manual. Storage: Inorganic #6
Disposal: #12a
Shelf Life: Indefinite if stored safely.
Soluble: Boiling water.
Color and Odor: White, odorless solid.
CAS No. 3811-04-9
Technical Note: Potassium Chlorate as an O2 Source: Molar volume is frequently measured by generating O2 using potassium chlorate and manganese dioxide. Molten KClO3 is a powerful oxidizer of organic materials like the rubber in the stoppers used in the gener- ating apparatus. Explosions can and do result. Please call or email us to obtain a free copy of Publication No. 1001, which describes a safe method involving the use of dry ice to measure molar volume.
Potassium Chloride
 HAZARD ALERT: Slightly toxic by ingestion. LD50 2600 mg/kg. Storage: Inorganic #2
Disposal: #26a
Shelf Life: Poor; hygroscopic.
Soluble: Water; slightly in alcohol. Color and Odor: White, odorless solid. CAS No. 7447-40-7
