Pyridine
HAZARD ALERT: Flammable liquid (flash point 20 °C/68 °F); harm- ful to skin and eyes; avoid prolonged exposure; toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption. LD50 891 mg/kg. TLV 16 mg/m3. Storage: Organic #2 in a dedicated flammables cabinet. If one is not available, store in a Flinn Saf-Stor TM Can.
Disposal: #5. U-Listed (U196); purchase small amounts for effec- tive inventory control.
Shelf Life: Good if stored safely.
Soluble: Water, alcohol, and other organic solvents.
Color and Odor: Colorless liquid with unique and entirely disagree- able odor.
CAS No. 110-86-1
Pyridinium Tribromide
HAZARD ALERT: Corrosive solid; causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage. Possible lachrymator and respiratory tract irri- tant. Exists in equilibrium with bromine when dissolved in solution. Treat with caution and do not use with metals.
Storage: Inorganic #2
Disposal: #26c
Shelf Life: Fair; store in a cool, dry place.
Soluble: Ethyl alcohol and glacial acetic acid; slightly soluble in water.
Color and Odor: Yellow to deep yellow, red crystalline powder; odorless.
Technical Note: Solid is used as a safer or “green” alternative to elemental bromine for bromination reactions in organic chemistry labs. Treat with caution and handle with care, as the solid slowly releases bromine when dissolved in solution. Do not use with metal labware or equipment.
CAS No. 39416-48-3
Pyrogallol
HAZARD ALERT: Toxic; readily absorbed through the skin; harmful to eyes and lungs. Stains skin. LD50 (mouse) 300 mg/kg.
Storage: Organic #8 in a Flinn Chem-Saf TM Bag inside a locked poisons cabinet.
Disposal: #18b
Shelf Life: Indefinite; crystals turn gray on exposure to light.

Lab Safety for Undergraduates
Safety in undergraduate laboratories is important! Did you know the American Chemical Society recently revised its requirements for bachelors degree programs to emphasize responsible disposal techniques, compliance with safety regulations, proper use of PPE to minimize exposure to hazards, the use of safety data sheets and safety reference materials and the ability to recognize chemical and physical hazards in the laboratory and react appropriately? Flinn Scientific is your best resource for safety across all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. Give us a call or send an email— Flinn is here to help as you integrate safety into your curriculum!
