Heating Mantle
Safe, efficient, formfitting heaters for evenly distributed applications of heat to round bottom flasks and similar shaped vessels. The heat ing elements are thoroughly enclosed in an insulating glass fabric that makes the mantle suitable for heating flammable liquids for which other forms of heating would not be safe. The glass fabric is covered with grounded stainless steel mesh providing extra safety in case of an accidental spill. Temperature limit is 450 °C. Input must be regulated by a variable temperature controller (such as Catalog No. AP4434) to control heating and protect the heating mantle.
Temperature Controller
Set and regulate temperature for heating mantles listed above. Controller compensates for line voltage fluctuations and ambient temperature changes. Maximum load current is 15 amps. One standard, duplex outlet included. Fivefoot, threewire cord and plug also provided.

   Digital vs. Mercury Thermometers
Melting Point Determination
For years, mercury thermometers set the standard for accuracy in melting point measurements. Accuracy came with a cost—a high cost in many cases—the hazard of broken thermometers, mercury spills and environ mental contamination. More and more states are now banning all mercury thermometers for this very reason. Concerned about safety and dedicated to maintaining quality science education, we recently compared the accu racy and precision of melting point instruments equipped with mercury and digital thermometers. We tested three different standard samples and found no difference in accuracy and improved precision using the new melting point apparatus with precision digital thermometer.
 Melting Point Apparatus
Avoid the hazards associated with traditional oil baths or mercury ther mometers—use the melting point apparatus to easily and accurately determine melting points. The melting point apparatus offers many notable features:
• Provides precise melting points up to 400 °C.
• Temperature resolution of 0.1 oC.
• Accepts up to three samples simultaneously using glass capillary tubes.
• Fits up to 2 mm diameter capillary tubes.
• Simply press a key to record up to six readings without need to make
a written record.
• Oven temperature automatically reverts to rampstart setting; test consecutive samples under identical conditions.
• 8X magnification focusing eyepiece and light give a clear view of the heating block.
• Safe and quick to use—unit heats up or cools down within just 5 minutes.
Melting point apparatus unit comes complete with a package of 100 capillary tubes and instructions; 115 Volts.
