Evolution of Yeast with a CO2
Gas Sensor—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
An evolution lab that integrates technology and quantitative data collec- tion! Students investigate artificial selection and adaptation of three varieties of yeast used in the food industry—baker’s, brewer’s and wine. In the baseline activity, yeast is used as a model organism to determine if respiration rates differ among types of yeast. Students then design their own investigations to test which environmental factors and food sources make these yeast thrive. Includes materials for the baseline activity and a comparison of four sugar types.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. A Vernier interface and CO2 gas sensor with respiration chamber are required and available separately.
Evolution of Yeast—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
An evolutionary twist on a popular fermentation lab!
Use a simple fermentation chamber to quantify the volume of carbon dioxide produced by yeast. Students investigate artificial selection and adaptation of three varieties of yeast used in the food industry—baker’s, brewer’s and winemaker’s. In the baseline activity, yeast is used as a model organism to determine if respiration rates differ among types of yeast. Students then design their own investigations to test which envi- ronmental factors and food sources make these yeast thrive. Includes materials for the baseline activity and a comparison of four sugar types.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Habitat Hold ’Em—Super Value Game
By: The Flinn Staff
An exciting and informative game to help students
learn about food chains, food webs and habitats! Students will use a deck of “creature cards” and follow the basic rules of the very popular game—Texas Hold ’Em—to learn more about “who eats whom” in a habitat. After the game has been played, the resulting food chains will be analyzed and food webs formed. Sure to be a hit! Complete with 5 decks of Habitat Hold ’Em creature cards and bingo chips.
Super Value Game is complete for five groups of six students playing at the same time. Replacement and additional card decks are available. All materials are reusable.
