Winogradsky Column: Biosphere in a
Bottle—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students observe microbial growth in their personally constructed Winogradsky column with soil collected from their surroundings . Repeating the soil microbe-growing technique—made famous by the Russian microbiologist, Sergei Winogradsky—is fun and motivating . Over a several month incubation period, students will witness an array of protozoa, fungi, bacteria and algae as their Winogradsky column goes through its successive stages . Includes enough materials for 10 Winogradsky columns (chemical nutrients, wooden stirring sticks and complete teaching instructions) .
Complete for 10 student groups. You supply the mud! The 10 columns included in the kit can be reused.
The Glowing Germ Contamination—
Demonstration Kit
By: Rhonda Reist
Olathe North H.S., Olathe, KS
It’s amazing how fast germs can be spread around your classroom completely unnoticed . In this activity you will place a small quantity of glowing lotion on a frequently touched object without the students’ knowledge . During a discussion of how disease causing microorganisms are transmitted, tell the students that you’ve contaminated one object in the lab before class and want to see how far the contamination has spread . Turn off the classroom lights and turn on one or more ultraviolet (black) lights . Anywhere that the fluorescent lotion has been spread it will glow . Students will be amazed at how contaminated the lab is .
A perfect activity for illustrating the importance of good laboratory hygiene in biology, microbiology, and chemistry classes alike . You’ll be guaranteed a classroom full of clean hands . Includes an eight-ounce container of the lotion (enough for many, many classes) and complete use instructions with presentation tips .
Concepts: Fluorescence, laboratory hygiene, ultraviolet light .
Time Required: One class period
Materials Provided: Glowing Germ lotion .
Note: An ultraviolet light and a completely darkened room are necessary .
Mold Testing—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Become a mold detective! Where are molds found?
Where are they most prevalent? Why are they potentially harmful? Students will use preparation-free 3MTM PetrifilmTM Yeast and Mold Count Plates to grow samples of molds collected from the environ- ment . Petrifilm plates are premade, sterile Petri dish replacements that are ready for inoculation right out of their package . Students simply inoculate, incubate, and count their molds . They will be surprised to learn that molds are everywhere! In addition, students will learn that molds come in many sizes, shapes, and colors; vary in number from place to place; and are often difficult to control . Includes 3M Petrifilm Yeast and Mold Count Plates and collection materials .
Complete with enough materials for 50 tests.
