Microscopes and Slides— Microscopy Study Kits, continued
 Microscope “Mystery”—A Drawing,
Identifying, and Size-Estimating
Challenge—Super Value Kit
By: Steve Parker, Cornell High School, Cornell, WI
Take your students on a journey into the “mysterious” microscopic world as new and perhaps strange-looking life forms are examined . This is an exceptional way to introduce students to the proper use and care of a microscope as well as boosting their observational, drawing, and record-keeping skills . Students will view specimens at different magnifications and then draw what they see . Applying their math skills, students will calculate the approximate size of microscopic objects . Then, using the information they have compiled, correctly identify eight “mystery” slides . This simple, but effective, activity uses no live cultures, messy biological stains, is easy to set up and can be reused many times .
Super Value Kit includes set of 8 prepared slides and masters of all student worksheets. All materials are reusable. Compound microscopes are required.
Investigating Tissue Microscopy—
Forensic Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
You are the head of a crime lab! Field agents have just brought back evidence from the crime scene and now it is up to the lab team to compile data from the evidence . Students examine four different slides to determine what type of tissue is present in each sample . Then they classify epithelial tissue according to its layers . Before reporting their findings to the investigators, students sketch tissue images and explain the features that led to their conclusions for each specific tissue type .
Kit includes eight prepared slides (two of each type), valuable Instructor’s Notes, and reproducible student handouts .
Super Value Kit is complete for 32 students working in groups of four. All materials are reusable.

 Forensics of Fibers—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Nothing catches students’ interest like catching a criminal! The window is broken and the television is missing! Luckily for student investigators the burglar left something behind—fibers from his or her clothing that got caught in the broken glass . Students eagerly take the samples back to the crime lab to be analyzed . Six different types of fibers are exam- ined using a burn test and dye analysis to discover their unique physical and chemical properties and determine the identity of each . Includes an optional microscopy extension activity .
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
