Forensics—DNA Evidence, continued
Dyeing for Forensics— Super Value Laboratory Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Hidden treasure is found in an old mansion and students are challenged to find the rightful owner. Along with the treasure are some personal mementos that will help solve the mystery. Six simulated DNA samples are analyzed using gel electrophoresis to determine which family described in the scenario is entitled to receive the mementos and money. This activity is a simulation of the type of analysis made using DNA fingerprinting with two special cases of relatedness testing—Y chromo- some and mitochondrial DNA testing—newer methods often used on old or degraded DNA. Since simulated DNA is used, the dyeing step is not necessary. Colorful bands are visible after the gel has run for 15–20 minutes, and results are read during the same lab period.
Complete for 20 gels. Requires electrophoresis apparatus and power supply.
Forensics—Document Analysis
Document Analysis—
Forensic Investigation Laboratory Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Your students will experience five investigative techniques as they collect evidence and establish standards for analyzing crime scene documents. They will have fun as they try to copy signatures, conduct microscopic examinations of different papers and pencil markings and perform chromatography tests on various ink samples. Their analyses will establish the level of authenticity of crime scene documents. Pencils, pens, paper samples, chromatography paper and necessary chemicals are provided as well as detailed student and instructor materials.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Counterfeit Money Detector Pen
Just place a mark anywhere on the suspect bill. If the mark stays amber, the bill is genuine U.S. currency; if the mark turns black, the money may be counterfeit. Ordinary paper contains starch, while U.S. currency paper does not. The pen “ink” contains an iodine–potassium iodide solution that when combined with starch, produces a charac- teristic blue complex.
Forensics—Drug Evidence
Analysis of Over-the-Counter Drugs— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Learn to analyze and identify over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and common antacids. Students test a variety of physical and chemical properties of actual OTC drug samples and then use their test results to analyze unknown pain reliever and antacid samples. Instructor’s Notes and reproducible student handouts included. Over-the-counter drug samples—pain relievers and antacids—and specialized equip- ment are provided in the kit.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen 24-well reaction plates are needed and available separately.
