Biological Experiments and
Activities Integrating Mathematics
Authors: Stephen Rodecker and Jim Patzold
Thirty biomath labs place a unique emphasis on mathematical appli- cations in biology. Students will learn techniques to collect, organize, manipulate, and analyze biological data mathematically. Book contains labs such as surface area to volume ratio in cells, pigment chromatog- raphy, carbon-14 age determination, UV light and yeast, gene mapping, and modeling DNA. Ten of the labs use no equipment other than a meter stick or calculator. The first 60 pages of the book consist of back- ground information with preparation tips, sample data, and possible answers for each lab. Reproducible student pages contain introduction, pre-lab activities, lab data sheets, questions, and numerous open-ended lab challenges. Intended for all levels of math, biology, honors biol- ogy, or AP biology classes, grades 9–college. Appendices and over 100 illustrations enhance learning. 191 pages, 81⁄2" x 11", soft cover.

Biological Experiments and Activities Integrating Mathematics
   $48.45
Over 200 biology demonstrations! Look no further for an idea bank of great biology demonstrations. The authors have reviewed, written and tested a multitude of demos. The best and most dramatic made it into this must-have resource book. There are enough demonstrations provided to literally perform “a demo a day” for the entire school year.
Each demonstration includes a write-up with an overview, applica- tions, theoretical basis, materials, safety precautions, demonstration directions, disposal procedures and references. The authors also provide a philosophical framework for the demonstrations in their introduction to the book.
The demonstrations are divided into sixteen chapters:

Experimental Biology Daily Lesson Plans CD
Author: Kristen Dotti
Project-based inquiry learning with student-designed experiments inspired by a curriculum that covers general biology course require- ments. Each unit begins with a demonstration to pique student curiosity and get the conversation started. Students then explore the topic by gathering information using observation skills and develop- ing a hypothesis. Working in lab groups, students design experiments and then use a peer-review process to evaluate and share results. Daily lesson plans include objectives, materials lists, procedures, handouts, grading rubrics and homework assignments to alleviate the pressure of day-to-day preparation. Teaching tips, study skills and coopera- tive learning techniques allow instructors to transition smoothly to a student-centered learning environment. Lesson plans can be taught in any order. Activities include model building, games, lab experiments, group simulations, reenactments, data analysis, research projects, debates, presentations and more. Study skills are incorporated into each lesson plan to promote continued student success. Mathematical skills are enhanced by graphical and data analysis.
POGILTM—Process Oriented Guided-Inquiry Learning
Flinn Scientific and the POGILTM Project have collaborated to publish a new series of student-centered learning activities for high school chemistry and biology. Each package includes a spiral-bound teacher’s edition and a CD with all the student handouts. Teacher’s edition has complete learning activities, answers to all questions, and teacher resource pages with learning objectives, knowledge prerequisites, assessment questions, and teaching tips.
The CD contains electronic student PDFs of all the activities. The PDFs may be reproduced by the teacher who purchased the book. You only have to purchase the teacher edition—the student edition is included on the CD!
