Build Your Own Hydrometer—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Just how thick is molasses? Density and specific gravity of liquids are deter- mined with an instrument called a hydrometer. In this experiment, students construct a hydrometer and calibrate it using liquids with known density or specific gravity values. Once calibrated, students use the hydrometers to determine the densities of several unknown liquid samples. Instructor’s Notes, extensive background material, and reproducible student handouts are included, along with all chemicals and supplies needed to perform the lab.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Freezing Point Depression—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Why do road crews spread salt on the roads in the winter? Is one salt better than another to melt snow and ice? Discuss colligative properties as students determine the effect of dissolved impurities on the freezing point of a substance and compare the effect of different additives on the freez- ing point. Teacher Notes and reproducible student handouts included. All necessary chemicals and specialized equipment are provided in the kit.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
