Indicator Sponge—A Discrepant Event
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Dip a red sponge into a red solution—watch it turn blue. Place the blue sponge into a blue solution—it turns back to red. How? Capture students’ attention and challenge their observation and prediction skills. Makes a great safety demonstration—check who didn’t clean up spilled acid by wiping the benchtop with your magical sponge. Demonstration Notes included. Concepts: Acid–base indicators.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Hydrochloric acid solution, sodium hydroxide solution, red and blue food dye, indicator sponge.

Organic Rainbow—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Penney Sconzo, Westminster Academy, Atlanta, GA
Uses universal indicator to vividly display the hydrolysis reaction of tert-butyl chloride. The reaction produces acid that is slowly consumed by a clear base solution—gradually increasing the pH to show the rainbow colors of the indicator. Once the base is fully depleted, acid concentration builds up again, reversing the color change back to red. Students record observations and form conclusions about the reaction. Demonstration Notes included. A 500-mL graduated or hydrometer cylinder is required and available separately.
Concepts: Organic chemistry, hydrolysis, indicators.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Acetone, tert-butyl chloride, universal indicator, sodium hydroxide solution, Beral-type pipets.
Goldenrod Paper—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
A beautiful demonstration to introduce students to acid–base indica- tors. The dye in this special goldenrod paper acts as an acid–base indicator. When the paper comes in contact with a base, it changes from goldenrod to a dark red. Write hidden messages, splash fake blood or amaze your students. Instructions describe what bases to use and how to perform the demonstration so the paper is reusable. The best part is that carbon dioxide in the air will slowly change the red color back to goldenrod—just in time for your next class!
Concepts: Acid–base indicators, equilibrium.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: 100 sheets of reusable goldenrod paper.
