Modeling Equilibrium—
Super Value Kit

What is equilibrium? What happens to the amounts of reactants and prod- ucts when equilibrium is reached? What if more reactants or products are then added? Well, seeing is believing! In this cooperative activity, students use plastic nickels to represent reactants and products in a reversible reac- tion. There’s one rate constant for the forward reaction, and a different rate constant for the reverse reaction. After each round of “reactions,” students record the new amounts of reactants and products. The nature of equilib- rium is clear as students see how the amounts change and then reach a constant value. Additional “nickel reactions” lead students to the definitions of the equilibrium constant and Le Chatelier’s principle. A great introduc- tion to core concepts! Includes detailed Instructor’s Notes, reproducible student worksheets, plastic nickels, data table, and graphing transparencies.
Super Value Kit is complete for cooperative activity. All materials are reusable.

Determination of Keq for FeSCN2+— Classic General Chemistry Experiment
Restoring Balance—Le Chatelier’s Principle and Equilibrium— Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
See page 23.
Equilibrium is a true chemical balancing act. What happens when the delicate balance is disturbed? In this classic chemistry experiment, students examine how concentration and temperature affect the sensitive “pink-and-blue” balance in the complex-ion equilibrium of cobalt chlo- ride in water. Students predict changes based on Le Chatelier’s Principle and see the colorful effects in action. Do your students think that reactant and product concentrations must be equal at equilibrium? Do students insist that the equilibrium constant means that concentrations of indi- vidual reactants and products are fixed and cannot change? Don’t rely on pictures in the textbook to chase away these common student misconcep- tions—let your students see for themselves the true nature of chemical equilibrium! Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data and answers to questions and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
