Fantastic Four-Color Oscillator—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students won’t believe their eyes as they watch this amazing oscillating reaction! Simply measure out and pour together four solutions, wait about 10 seconds, and observe the solution flash to green and then to blue and to purple and to red. And if that’s not enough—this four-color cycle will repeat itself for well over an hour! Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oscillating reactions, equilibrium.
Time Required: 20 minutes to 1 hour
Chemicals Provided: Potassium bromate solution, malonic acid/potas- sium bromide solution, cerium ammonium nitrate/sulfuric acid solution, and ferroin solution.

An Oscillating Chemical Reaction—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Amaze your students! Pretend you have magical powers that can cause the color of a solution to alter between orange and colorless. Simply add three white solids to a colorless solution and presto—the solution turns orange, then colorless and orange again. The color of the solu- tion will oscillate approximately every 35 seconds for one-half hour or more. A magnetic stirrer is highly recommended. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Oscillating reactions, reaction mechanisms.
Time Required: 20 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Malonic acid, potassium bromate, manganous sulfate, and sulfuric acid solution.
Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.

Spring Blooms—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Spring has arrived—time for April showers to bring May flowers. Welcome Spring with this two-part acid–base and chemical equilib- rium demonstration. In part one, one set of paper flowers are soaked in colorless indicator solutions. Spraying the dried blooms with ammonia gives a beautiful bouquet of purple, red, and blue flowers. In part two, a second set of flowers, saturated with cobalt chloride, are blue when dry, but quickly turns pink when sprayed with water. A colorful introduction to acid–base indicators and Le Chatelier’s principle. Demonstration Notes included.
Concepts: Acid–base indicators, Le Chatelier’s principle.
Time Required: 10 minutes
Materials Provided: Ammonia solution, phenolphthalein indicator solution, thymolphthalein indicator solution, universal indicator solu- tion, cobalt chloride solution, filter paper, pipe cleaners, tissue paper. Note: Spray bottles are required and available separately.
