Dyeing with Indigo—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce the color and excitement of organic chemistry to your students! Watch as a bright yellow dye is oxidized by air to a rich blue color right before your students’ eyes. Indigo, the organic dye used in this lab, was used by the Romans and is still used today to dye fabrics such as blue jeans. Discuss the chemistry of fibers and fabrics using the included fabric swatches. Each swatch contains six different fibers so dyeing-capability comparisons can be made. This activity can also be used in consumer science and to teach the importance of chemistry in history. Dyeing makes a memorable organic chemistry lab experi- ence—one your students will not soon forget! Includes fabric swatches, all necessary chemicals and specialized equipment, Instructor’s Notes, and reproducible student handouts, as well as detailed information on indigo dye and its place in history.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Extraction and Isolation of Caffeine—
Student Laboratory Kit
Caffeine is a naturally occurring heterocyclic mole-
cule called an alkaloid. Alkaloids contain at least one nitrogen with lone pair electrons, giving them their characteristic basic property. Caffeine is found in the seeds, leaves, and fruits of many plants. In this lab activity, students first perform separation methods by extracting and isolating caffeine from tea leaves. Next they calculate percent recovery and different student groups analyze the recovered caffeine for purity using different methods, including thin-layer chromatography (TLC), crystallization, and sublimination. Includes reproducible student hand- outs, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. A short-wave UV lamp is required and available separately.
