Flinn Forensic Files—
Footwear Evidence
By: The Flinn Staff
Capture the most intricate details of footwear impressions using the BioFoam® impression system! A criminal must enter and exit a crime scene on foot at some point, even if only for a short distance. Students will enjoy the process of making permanent castings using their own footwear. They then analyze each other’s work and compare those results to the suspect’s footprint from the crime scene to determine a possible match, just like real-world investigators in a crime lab!
The classroom set, AP7752, is complete for eight student groups. AP7749 serves as an individual lab kit or demonstration.
Flinn Forensic Files—Ink Inspection
By: The Flinn Staff
Imagine the panic of discovering that $20,000 is
missing from your checking account! When Alyson Marie Combs discovers her bank account has been emptied by someone forging her signature on a check, she is determined to work with law enforcement to find the culprit. Investigators gathered six different types of pens from the bank that may have been used to forge the signature. Students act as forensic scientists by analyzing the components of each type of ink using radial chromatography. Watch the excitement grow as they determine the instrument used to forge Ms. Combs’ signature. Never before has chromatography been so captivating!
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Gunshot Residue—
Forensics Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
When a gun is fired, a series of chemical reactions occurs and chemi- cals are quickly dispersed into the surrounding environment. The chemicals are likely to be on the gun, in the gun, on the shooter, in the air, on nearby objects, and on objects struck by the bullet. Learn the chemical tests used by forensic scientists as they track down gunshot residue. Revealing these unseen telltale chemical residues can be very significant at a crime scene and very motivating for your students. The kit contains enough chemicals to perform the demonstration tests at least seven times.
Concepts: Firearm chemistry, nitrate testing, lead testing, false posi- tive, false negative, presumptive test.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Materials Provided: Cotton swabs, Beral-type pipets, diphenylamine
solution, sodium rhodizonate solution, lead nitrate solution, copper nitrate solution.
