Forensics Entomology
Of Maggots and Murder—Forensic
Entomology Laboratory Kit
By: Lisa Carloye
Washington State University, Pullman WA
Delve deeper into the world of forensic science with this student- captivating activity. Students will investigate a possible homicide using unusual clues that may break the case—maggots! Determining the living conditions and growth habitats of maggots helps forensic scien- tists calculate an approximate time of death. Was it murder? Students learn how to collect evidence and relevant data and use the informa- tion to solve the case. Simulated maggots will be used to determine the time and cause of death for four different simulated crime scenes. Materials may be saved and reused for future use. A must have forensic science activity!
Complete for 30 students working pairs.

Forensics of Fibers—Student Laboratory Kit
Nothing catches students’ interest like catching a criminal! The window is broken and the television is missing! Luckily for student investigators the burglar left something behind—fibers from his or her clothing that got caught in the broken glass. Students eagerly take the samples back to the crime lab to be analyzed. Six different types of fibers are exam- ined using a burn test and dye analysis to discover their unique physical and chemical properties and determine the identity of each. This kit includes all the necessary materials, complete Instructor’s Notes and an optional microscopy extension activity.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Forensics Fingerprinting
Flinn Fingerprinting—
Activity-Stations Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
“Who-dun-it?” Students will learn the key characteristics used in classi- fying fingerprints as they solve a crime scene mystery. Giant fingerprint sets help students learn key fingerprint patterns and identify their suspect. Interest will be high as students then make their own fingerprints, practice techniques for lifting their own latent fingerprints, and classify them. Background information and complete instructions included.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Six rolls of 3/4" transparent tape is required but not included in the kit. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs.
