Absorption Spectroscopy— Demonstration Kit
By: John Brodemus, Richards H.S., Oak Lawn, IL
Diffraction grating dissects light passed through various colored solu- tions. Students view band absorption as a continuous spectrum filtered by the provided solutions. Using these data and a color wheel, students to make their own predictions, observing dark line spectra from chloride solutions of erbium and praseodymium, similar to the spectra studied by astronomers analyzing light from stars across the cosmos.
Concepts: Spectroscopy, visible light spectrum, absorbance.
Time Required: One class period
Materials Provided: Flinn diffraction grating, copper(II) chloride solution, potassium permanganate solution, erbium chloride solution, praseodymium chloride solution, black construction paper, microchem- istry solution bottles, red and yellow food dye.
Oooh! Aaah! Style Flame Tests—
Chemical Demonstration Kit
By: Rhonda Reist, Olathe North High School, Olathe, KS
Demonstrate the characteristic colors of several metal ions with a flame test that is large enough for an entire class to observe. An easy setup and excellent flame colors make this kit a perfect addition to your chemistry demonstrations. Add a few milliliters of alcohol to several borosilicate glass Petri dishes, place a small scoop of a different metallic salt into each dish, then light each solution and listen for the ooohs and aaahs! Concepts: Visible spectra.
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Copper chloride, potassium chloride, lithium chloride, strontium chloride, sodium chloride, and methyl alcohol. Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab. A safety shield and fire blanket are also highly recommended. Borosilicate glass Petri dishes are required and available separately.
Safety-First Flame Tests— Chemical Demonstration Kit By: The Flinn Staff
Put safety first with this flame test demonstration! Color flames with metallic salts to demonstrate the emission spectra of metal salts. Adding a pump of hand sanitizer to different salts, the flames will burn in a rain- bow display. Requires borosilicate glass Petri dishes, available separately. Concepts: Visible spectra
Time Required: 15 minutes
Chemicals Provided: Strontium chloride, sodium chloride, boric acid and potassium chloride.

Flinn C-Spectra®—
The Diffraction Grating Alternative
Wow! That’s what students will say when they see the colors of
the spectrum using the Flinn C-Spectra®. The vivid spectrum with distinct color separations helps students understand and enjoy the spectrum. The best feature of all is that you’ll no longer need to strain your eyes using those old spectroscopes. No matter where you look through the C-Spectra, you will always easily see the spectrum. C-Spectra won’t bust your budget either. One 8" x 10" sheet can be cut to provide 30 11⁄2"-square pieces—enough for an entire class. 200 lines/mm.
Once you’ve
tried the Flinn C-Spectra® you’ll never want to use a spectroscope again!
