Micro Mole Rockets—
Hydrogen and Oxygen Mole Ratio—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: Bob Becker, Kirkwood H.S., Kirkwood, MO
The combustion reaction of hydrogen and oxygen has been used to send people to the moon and to design electric vehicles for the future. What factors determine the explosiveness of this reaction? In this microscale lab activity, students generate hydrogen and oxygen and collect the gases by water displacement in small plastic pipet bulbs. They then test the combustion properties of the gases, first separately, then in mixtures of various proportions. The goal is to find the most powerful gas mixture and use it to launch a micro mole rocket across the room! Students learn about mole ratios, stoichiometry, and limiting reagents as they compete to beat class or school records for the distance traveled by a micro mole rocket. Be forewarned—your students will think these difficult topics are the most fun they have had all year. Includes repro- ducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Instructor’s Notes with sample data, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Instructions are provided for making piezoelectric igniters, which may be used instead of matches, to test gas mixtures. Piezoelectric igniters may also be purchased separately.

Fuel Cell Football Apparatus
By: The Flinn Staff
The “kick” is up and it is...GOOD! Fuel-cell field
goal! When properly filled with a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, a plastic pipet bulb can be projected 20–30 feet. The goal of this activity is to make a “chemical field goal” by sending the pipet bulb through the goal post on the opposite side of the laboratory. Apparatus kit includes the materials to build a 1/7 scale replica of an NFL goalpost, a launcher, and unique launch pad. Instructions provide directions for building the goalpost apparatus and procedure for preparing chemicals and launch- ing fuel cell “footballs.”
Optional Micro-Mole Rockets Student Laboratory Kit (sold sepa- rately) includes all of the required chemicals to perform this activity with 30 students working in pairs. For added fun, make this activity “official” by wearing a referee jersey.
