Heats of Reaction and Hess’s Law—Small-Scale Calorimetry Laboratory Kit
An intense flame, blinding light and searing heat—magnesium burning in air is a dazzling reaction, but how much heat is produced? In this advanced microscale experiment, students use an indirect method and Hess’s Law to determine the heat of reaction for magnesium combustion. Students measure the heats of reaction for magnesium and magnesium oxide reacting with hydrochloric acid, then using Hess’s Law and a little algebra, they combine the measurements with the heat of formation of water to determine the heat of reaction for the overall reaction. Special small-scale calo- rimeters included with the kit give remarkably accurate results. Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Smashing Thermit Reaction—
Thermodynamics in a Bag—
Super Value Kit
Introduce the topic of thermodynamics using the hands-on activities provided in this kit. Students will experience exothermic and endothermic reactions as they perform three different chemical reactions. All the reactions are performed in heavy-duty, zipper-lock plastic bags. The setup and reactions are quick, and the bags are reusable, which saves precious laboratory time and money. Students monitor temperature changes
by touch or quantitatively by the use of
a thermometer (not included). Includes chemicals, bags, pipets, Teacher Notes and reproducible student worksheets. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 24 students working in pairs.

Demonstration Kit
This loud and fiery variation of the classic thermit reaction is sure to grab your students’ attention. Take two rusty iron balls, wrap one in aluminum foil, bang them together and watch the fireworks! Enjoy all the pyrotechnics of the thermit reaction without the elaborate prepa- ration and cleanup. The iron balls are easily recharged with rust and reusable an infinite number of times. A great introduction to single-displacement and exothermic reactions. Teacher Demonstration Notes included

Whoosh Bottle—Demonstration Kit
Wow students with a whoosh! Use this exciting demonstration to teach combustion reactions, molar relationships and thermodynamics. Students love to see the blue alcohol flame shoot out of the bottle and yellow dancing flames pulsate as more air is drawn in. The detailed procedure and safety information makes this popular explosive demonstration safe to perform.
