Learn a quick way to assess the relative toxicities of chemicals commonly found in road deicers. This lab has students examine the effects of aqueous solutions of sodium chloride, magnesium chloride and calcium chloride on germination and growth of lettuce seeds. The goal is to identify which of the road deicers is the most benign with respect to potential environmental impacts. It requires very little preparation time and exposes students to the tenets of green chemistry and ecotoxicity.

Introduce acid–base titrations with this green chemistry version developed in partnership with Beyond Benign that uses wood ash, a renewable source of base that can be recov- ered from combusted wood and organic materials, instead of sodium hydroxide. Students extract base from the wood ash by wet methods and then determine the base potential compared to NaOH. Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
