Paper Airplanes—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Watch student engagement “take off” in this exciting design challenge! After learn- ing the basics of paper airplane design, teams are asked to design a new toy paper airplane for FlinnToy. While staying within
a budget, teams decide which materials to use and the best overall design to meet the criteria. As weights are added and materials change, students will have to make design alterations to ensure a long and stable flight. Whose design will FlinnToy choose?
Balloon Rockets— Guided-Inquiry Kit
Teach experimental design with Newton’s laws of motion and rocket thrust. Students tether a balloon to fishing line and find
a successful combination of orientation, drag and thrust that can launch the balloon across the room. Students run various
trials and modify balloon rockets based on findings. Includes background informa- tion, Teacher Notes with teaching tips and answers to questions.
