Modern Topics— Inquiry Lab Kit
AP® Physics 2, Big Idea 6, Investigation 14
In this advanced inquiry investigation, students devise a method for measuring the width of very thin materials by taking advan- tage of the principles of diffraction. The introductory activity provides instructions for setting up an apparatus to create diffraction patterns by shining a monochromatic red laser light at the edges of various materi- als. The guided-inquiry activity challenges students to devise a means for calculating the widths of the various materials and assessing experimental error.

Flinn Inquiry Labs for
Refraction and Lenses— Inquiry Lab Kit
AP® Physics 2, Big Idea 6, Investigation 12
The lab begins with introductory activity to investigate Snell’s law using a gelatin-filled dish and laser pointer. Students draw
the rays of incidence and refraction and compare the angles. A series of guided-in- quiry questions lead students to predict focal lengths of concave and convex
lenses and the location and type of images formed. Students then perform experiments to confirm their predictions. Enough mate- rials are provided for six student groups to perform the introductory activity and for
a single demonstration setup of the guid- ed-inquiry equipment. Additional lenses, meter stick optics equipment and lasers are available separately.

Electromagnetic Induction— Inquiry Lab Kit
AP® Physics 2, Big Idea 4, Investigation 10
This advanced inquiry lab begins with an introductory activity in which students use
a galvanometer, coils of wire and a magnet to investigate the effect of magnetic flux on
a coil of wire through a structured-inquiry approach. This procedure provides a model for a guided-inquiry activity in which students are challenged to design a proce- dure and use available materials to build an AC generator that lights an LED.
