Who’s the Daddy? DNA Profiling— Super Value Kit
Solve a paternity case by re-creating DNA fingerprinting steps. Students assemble double-stranded DNA “molecules,” cut them into fragments (restriction enzyme digestion) and separate these by size in a simulated gel. Next they “denature” DNA fragments, “blot” them and treat them with simulated radioactive probes. The resulting autoradiograph identifies DNA fragments that match the unknown parent.

Learn how to isolate DNA from human cells—yours! DNA can be isolated from many types of tissue. In this activity, students extract DNA from their own cheek cells. The procedure for securing student cheek cells is safe and requires only a rinsing of the mouth with water. Isolating “personal” DNA adds
