Biofuels—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
The lab begins with an introductory activ- ity in which students conduct a controlled experiment to investigate the amount of carbon dioxide produced through the fermentation reaction of yeast with two different types of carbohydrates. Students observe the amount of carbon dioxide produced and determine the most produc- tive carbohydrate food source. Students are then challenged to design and implement a method to collect and quantify the amount of carbon dioxide produced.

Paper Airplanes—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Watch student engagement “take off” in this exciting design challenge! After learn- ing the basics of paper airplane design, teams are asked to design a new toy paper airplane for FlinnToy. While staying within
a budget, teams decide which materials to use and the best overall design to meet the criteria. As weights are added and materials change, students will have to make design alterations to ensure a long and stable flight. Whose design will FlinnToy choose?

Build a Water Wheel—
Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
In the first part of this activity, students build an eight-bucket water wheel from provided materials. Then each group tests its wheel, collecting data and making obser- vations. Next, students brainstorm and make improvements to their designs. The improved water wheels are given a final test to determine maximum power generated. A unique testing-station setup eliminates the need for hot glue and allows for easy modi- fication of the water wheels. Complete for 30 students working in groups of three and two testing stations.

Trebuchet—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
A full-size trebuchet is capable of launching projectiles of 90 kilograms a distance of 300 meters by combining the mechanical advantage of a lever with that of a sling. With this smaller version, students master the variables that must be optimized in order to breach enemy walls with this engaging Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM! Students make use of an easily adjustable base to test how different heights, arm lengths, counter weights and release angles determine the flight distance of the projectile.
Egg-Streme Parachuting—Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
Parachuting has never been this egg-citing! After learning about parachute construction and the physics of how they work, students design and construct a parachute that will protect an egg from cracking open. Avoid
the mess by using of water-filled plastic eggs enclosed in a bag—or up the ante by using real eggs! By measuring weight, drop height and time of free fall, students explore the rela- tionships between canopy surface area, drag and the resulting acceleration of the egg.

Make a Wire Maze Game— Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM
In this Flinn STEM Design ChallengeTM, students create a wire maze game that puts their hand-eye coordination to the test. First, students complete an introductory activity that reinforces the concepts of open and closed circuits. Then the creativity begins! As students brainstorm to ensure that they are meeting the specific design criteria and constraints to design a success- ful solution, they actively engage in science and engineering practices. Complete for eight student groups.
