Coronary heart disease and stroke are the first and third leading causes of death in the U.S. Elevated blood cholesterol has been established as a serious risk factor for both of these conditions. A disease known as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) causes an increase in blood levels of the "bad" form of cholesterol, known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL). In heterozygous patients, untreated FH causes a shortened life span, while homozygous individuals usually die before age 20 of coronary heart disease. In this experiment, a simulated genetic test for FH is demonstrated in which patients are tested for a DNA polymorphism linked to the FH gene. The experiment requires electrophoresis apparatus, water bath, DC power supply, micropipets, and a transilluminator. The kit contains complete instructions, background information, ready-to-load DNA samples, agarose, buffers, and the necessary stains. DNA source is Lambda phage. The DNA contained in this kit must be kept frozen prior to use. Orders will only be shipped between September 15 and May 15 unless we are told otherwise. Upon receipt, this kit should be stored in the freezer until just before it is to be used.
