Colorless, odorless, tasteless—the chemical and physical properties of many gases make them invisible to our senses. But we know they exist because gases have properties we can test. Some gases are lighter than air. Other gases are flammable. While others have a distinct odor or color. In this experiment, students prepare microscale amounts of five common gases: hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ammonia. They then investigate the characteristic physical and chemical properties of these gases. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, Teacher Notes, and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies. Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Super Value Kit is complete for 5 classes of 30 students working in pairs. Perform this experiment in a fume hood or well-ventilated lab.
