Prelab Preparation

  1. Copy handouts for each student group.
  2. Copy and cut the Initial Patient Screening slip along the dotted lines. Each student group will receive one slip allowing them to focus on one patient.
  3. Retain the Patient History Sheets in order to answer student questions.

Lab Hints

  • The steps students will need to take to successfully diagnose their patient are listed in the Patient Profile Packet. Students should be able to narrow the list of potential conditions down to six to eight using the initial information provided.
  • Remind students that not all patients will exhibit all the symptoms listed for a condition and that not all symptoms listed are related to the medical condition that is bringing the patient to the urgent care facility.
  • Remind students that this activity is not intended for use as a clinical diagnosis of health problems. If a person is sick, it is best to consult a physician, nurse or nurse practitioner in a medical office.
  • Due to insurance coverage limitations, the student doctors are only allowed to order diagnostic lab tests worth up to 15 points without incurring a grade penalty. If desired, this value may be altered.
  • If desired, mark out the diagnosis on each Patient History Sheet and give the sheet to the student group.
