Product Details

Introduce the basic concepts of osmosis and diffusion with this involving laboratory activity. Using a colloidal solution of starch and sodium chloride students will clearly observe the process of dialysis, observe diffusion through a semipermeable membrane, separate an inorganic salt from a colloid and test for the presence of chloride ions and starch. Enough materials are supplied for 30 students working in pairs. Detailed student and teacher materials provided.

Performance Expectations

MS-PS1-2. Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
MS-LS1-2. Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways parts of cells contribute to the function.
