In this lab experience, students characterize different elemental samples as either metal, nonmetal or metalloid using elemental positions on the periodic table to identify trends associated with metallic characteristics. Students will conclude that moving down a group on the periodic table correlates with an increase in metallic character, and that moving across a period correlates to a decrease in metallic character.
