Introduce microscale techniques to investigate how temperature and pressure affect gas-phase reactions by studying the combination reaction of nitrogen dioxide, a reddish brown gas, to form a colorless dinitrogen tetroxide gas. The gas mixture is safely sealed in a polyethylene pipet bulb and then exposed to changes in temperature and pressure. The cool color changes will help your students predict the position of the equilibrium changes as the temperature and pressure change. Concepts of LeChâtelier’s principle may be applied to determine whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic.
