Technical Note:
Gibberellic acid is offered as the parent acid (G0042, G0003) and as the potassium salt (G0045, G0046). The parent compounds are 100% gibberellic acid. The potassium salt is a 10% mixture with inert ingredients. The major difference between the two forms is the solubility. Gibberellic acid is soluble in alcohol whereas the potassium salt is soluble in water. Solutions of gibberellic acid store poorly. Prepare fresh within 2–3 days of use. A typical working strength solution of gibberellic acid for plant hormone studies is 1000 ppm. To prepare this solution, add 1 gram to 5 mL of 95% ethyl alcohol. Add a drop or two of baby shampoo. The baby shampoo acts as a wetting agent. Now add this volume to 1 liter of warm, distilled or deionized water. To prepare the potassium salt solution, dissolve 1 gram in 1 liter of water and add a drop or two of baby shampoo. Because the potassium salt is a 10% mixture, this solution has a working strength of 100 ppm. Both products will act as plant growth promoters.
